The Annual Sun West Student Artwork Contest

All Sun West students, PreK to Grade 12, are encouraged to enter the Sun West Student Artwork Contest. Prizes and recognition are awarded in four Grade categories. (PreK-Grade 3, Grades 4-6, Grades 7-9, and Grades 10-12).

Who can enter?

All Sun West School Division students may enter. Students compete in four categories based on their Grade. The categories are PreK-Grade 3, Grades 4-6, Grades 7-9, and Grades 10-12.

What kind of artwork can be entered?

Artwork must be hand-drawn on 11 X 17 inch paper.
Artwork may be created using ink, colour pencil or pen, chalk, charcoal, and paint.
Artwork can NOT be created using technology including AI, digital graphic design programs such as Canva, digital art programs or traced manually or by traced using technology.
Artwork is NOT to include three dimensional objects or include embellishments.

What themes should artwork represent?

Artwork must depict life in Sun West School Division and/or in its communities.

What are the Prizes and Recognition?

A winner and a runner up will be selected in each category.
Each winner and runner up will receive a gift card, and certificate of recognition.
Two copies of the artwork of each winner and runner up with be mounted. One copy of the mounted artwork will be given to the winner and runner up and the other copy with be displayed at the Sun West School Division office in Rosetown for one year.
Each winner and runner up will be presented with their gift card, certificate, and mounted artwork at a ceremony held at their school. Following the ceremony, Sun West will hold a celebratory pizza party for the winner and runner ups' classes.

How do you enter?

The student first and last name, their Grade, and school name, should be in pencil on the back of the artwork.

All artwork will be returned to each students' school.

What is the deadline for entries?

The deadline is December 5, 2025.

Last Year's Winners

The winners of the 2024-25 Sun West Student Art Contest have been announced! Over 250 students from Sun West schools entered and winners have been selected in four categories. Each first and second place winner in each category will receive a gift card and framed version of their artwork. Their original artwork will be displayed in the Sun West Division Office all of next year. In addition, each winner will be awarded a certificate that will be presented to them by a Sun West Board of Education member at their school and on the same day their entire class will enjoy a free pizza party!

Previous Year's Winners

Over 300 students, from two thirds of Sun West’s schools entered the contest that started this fall. The winners of the 2023-24 Sun West Student Art Contest were recognized in May 2024 by presentations made at their schools and celebrated with pizza parties.

Following the December 2 deadline, the student entries went through an initial review and top entries were selected in each category. The top entries were then judged by a group that included the Board of Education, Sun West Division Office Staff and some student leaders. These judges voted for the entries they felt were best and those with the most votes were awarded first place and runner up in each category. In May, the seven winning students received gift certificates and celebrated with their classmates with a pizza party, courtesy of Sun West. Their artwork will also be displayed in the Sun West Division Office for a year. Director of Education Vicki Moore and the Board of Education Trustee for their school visited their schools to present them with their prizes.
