Rosetown Central High School (RCHS) Grade 12 student Jan Nasibog, who is well-known for her strong leadership roles at her school, in the school division and even provincially, has been selected to receive the Centennial Scholars Entrance Scholarship from the University of British Columbia (UBC). This four-year scholarship will cover the full cost of her first undergraduate degree.

Jan and her family are recent immigrants from the Philippines and like many newcomers has faced many challenges. The adversity that she faced helped make Jan someone who tries to embrace every opportunity that Canada has to offer. This approach to life, is very much one of the major contributing factors to her receiving the UBC Entrance Scholarship.

The UBC Entrance Scholarship requirements included high academic achievement and significant contributions to her school and community. Since Jan’s family came to Rosetown in 2018, Jan has never let the grass grow under her feet. She has been a member and a leader in the RCHS Student Representative Council, Drama, and Yearbook clubs throughout out her high school career. For three years, Jan has been a member of the Sun West Student Leadership Program playing a key role in the Youth Consultation Team as well as taking on special projects such as serving on the Division Calendar Committee for two years, co-hosting the Sun West 2024 Public Meeting, Career Fair, and the Creator Olympics.

Due to Jan’s outstanding leadership qualities, Sun West nominated her to be a member of the Provincial Youth Council. Jan was one of only 12 students from across the province who served on the Council during the 2023-24 school year and played apart in making recommendations to the Saskatchewan Minister of Education. Jan was also selected in 2024 as one of 20 students from across Canada to travel to the Vimy Monument in France.

Jan’s leadership experience won’t end with high school. Jan's dream is to pursue a career as an international diplomat. Jan’s goal is after receiving her undergraduate degree to enter the International Relations program at UBC. She feels the UBC Faculty of Arts offers a combination of diverse disciplines and uniquely positive student experiences that would best prepare her for a career in diplomacy.

"Earning this scholarship has given me the stage to transform my dreams into something achievable,” said Jan. “Sometimes, I wonder if I’m still dreaming—yet each day I wake up to a community so incredibly supportive of a future I once thought was impossible. I am incredibly grateful to everyone who has invested in my journey: my teachers, advisors, friends, family, and now UBC. Thank you! Without your support, I wouldn’t have found my potential. This moment marks not just my achievement, but the beginning of how I'll pay everyone’s faith forward… and forward I will go. The future is ours to make!” She concluded.

Congratulations and best wishes Jan!
