Sun West School Division is pleased to announce Penny Calvert as the new Student Support Services Consultant, a role that draws on her extensive experience in inclusive education, leadership, and student support.
“Penny is known for her collaborative leadership style, advocacy for exceptional learners, and data-informed decision-making,” explained Sun West Director of Education Darryl Seguin. “She is well positioned to support schools, families, and communities in her new role. We look forward to the leadership, expertise, and commitment she brings to strengthening student support services across the division,” he added.
Ms. Calvert brings more than two decades of experience supporting students with diverse and intensive learning needs across K–12 settings. She is currently Principal of Kyle Composite School, where she works closely with the Student Support Teacher, families, and community partners to support wraparound services and helps to ensure students receive responsive, individualized programming.
Prior to joining Sun West, Ms. Calvert held several inclusive education leadership roles with Peace Wapiti Public School Division in Alberta. As Assistant Principal and Inclusive Education Lead, she coordinated multidisciplinary teams, conducted Level B psychoeducational assessments, and supported schools in implementing collaborative response models to address academic, behavioural, and mental health needs. She also facilitated professional learning for educators and supported assistive technology decisions for students with intensive needs.
Ms. Calvert’s career began in the classroom in School District No. 81 in Fort Nelson, British Columbia, where she spent more than a decade as a teacher and head teacher.
Her strong practical background is complemented by advanced academic training. Ms. Calvert holds a Master of Science in Educational Psychology from Walden University (an accredited online university), a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Special Education from the University of Manitoba, and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Manitoba. She has completed specialized training in areas such as Level B assessment, violence threat risk assessment, trauma-informed practice, mental health literacy, and individualized program planning.
“I am excited to be joining the Student Support Services team as a consultant this fall, stated Ms. Calvert. “I look forward to working alongside colleagues across the division to support students, families, and schools, and to contributing to the important work happening in student support,” she concluded.
