Miss Larson's Grade Five Class Learn about Various First Nations Cultures in Canada

Miss Larson’s grade five class has been learning about the various First Nations cultures throughout Canada.  We were very fortunate to have one of our students, Dylan Currie, and his family present to us about the Métis culture.  On November 9th, Catherine Currie, Cameron Boyd, Rosalyn Smith, and Mario and Myles Natomagan joined our class to teach us about various parts of the Métis culture from the Pinehouse, Saskatchewan region.

The presentation began with a slide show presentation by Catherine, where we learned about some of the various cultural traditions of the Métis people, including some of the types of food they eat, the language they speak, and beliefs they have.  Afterward the presentation, students were split into groups and had the opportunity to try out two fun activities.  Rosalyn demonstrated jigging to the students.  The students then had the opportunity to try their hand at jigging, which was more difficult than it looked but lots of fun!  As well, the students were shown how to make fried bannock.  The presentation concluded with all of us tasting the bannock we had made.  It was so delicious!  Our class really enjoyed the presentation, and learned a lot!  We greatly appreciate the time that the whole family took to help us learn more about the Métis culture!
