Eaton School Skype Trip

Where would you like to go today?

Eaton school in Eatonia has found a great way to take field trips without leaving the classroom. The school uses Skype meetings to take K-9 students on trips around the world. They also use it to collaborate with other schools on specific topics, consult an expert, or a mystery Skype.

Virtual field trips have allowed students to go to a Zoo, the rain forest in Brazil and they played music for a classroom in Nairobi, Africa. The Grade 5/6 teacher Nichole Bredy says that her class learned a lot about Africa in her session. They learned about how the school was run. "It built character and gratitude in the students. To see the conditions they lived in. To see how proud they were of the school they had despite all the things that they didn't have compared to us." She said that it is great way to expand upon their knowledge base. It builds global awareness and improves global citizenship.

The virtual field trips have been going on for a while now, and teachers book the meetings in advance. When faced with a difficult topic in the curriculum teachers will use a Skype meeting to help. "Where they used to use pen and paper, now they can do it virtually" Bredy explained. "We learned how to do longitude and latitude by visiting a school in Victoria, and they've got it down pat now." She has seen improvement in communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity.

Eaton school participated in a Skypathon on November 22, 2017. They essentially traveled around the equator as they went over 44,000 kilometers in one day. There are many more trips planned for the school year, but they won't need a plane ticket!Published:
