Welcome back everyone. Another school year is upon us
and I t rust that your summer break was enjoyable.
We have several new students to the school this year
including our Kindergartens. Eaton School is happy to have you.
We are certain that you will enjoy your school experience here
as we have a multitude of programs for you to take part in.
There have been a few changes to our bell schedule
this year. These changes have amounted to changing bell
times a few minutes either way in order to align our schedule
with the rest of the Sun West School Division. This alignment
will make for easy delivery of high school distance education
classes which increases the course options for our students and ultimately increases opportunities in the future. Through distance education classes, our students can now enroll in courses such as Psychology and Law. These courses are broadcast, via the internet, from other schools in the division and our students can see, hear and talk to the teacher in the sending school through SMART Boards. Technology and its use in schools has increased dramatically in recent years. I’m proud to say that Eaton School has embraced technology as a learning tool. It’s quite cool!
As usual, we are offering a wide range of extra-curricular programs this year. Currently, Cross-Country, Midget Volleyball, Jr. Boys’ Volleyball, Jr. Girls’ Volleyball, Sr. Girls’ Volleyball and Football are taking place. Yes, you read it correctly… FOOTBALL is back in Eatonia! GO SPARTANS!
The new playground equipment that was installed last spring is a hit. THANK YOU again to the Eatonia Lions Club, Eatonia Community Service Co-operative Ltd., Jaydee Agtech (Kindersley) and all the volunteers who made this possible! Without you, this project would not have been possible. The community support for Eaton School is phenomenal and greatly appreciated!
I’m extremely excited about this year. Enthusiasm is high and Spartan Pride is evident. I see good things happening and that is refreshing!
Have a great year! As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at the school!
Mr. Craig Vanthuyne

NOTICE TO ALL
CANTEEN USERS
The Canteen will open on Wednesday, September 8. It will operate
much the same as last year, with prices basically the same.
It will only be open on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday each week.
This reduction is due to less student volunteers willing to work regularly,
as well as teacher supervision at noon.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to the students and families of Kindergarten and Grade One! I am looking forward to working with you and have great expectations for a fun filled year! Our classroom theme is happy faces. So it’s fairly easy to smile in our classroom this year because the smiles are everywhere.
On September 1st we welcomed ten new eager Kindergarten students to Eaton School. The new Kindergarten students include: Trinity Connolly, Taryn Green, Becky Harkness, Brooke O’Connor, Willy Peters, Kylee Price, Kenzie Punter, Dani Stallmann, Kearin Wagner and Nathan Zbetnoff. Mrs. Craney will be the Educational assistant working with the Kindergarten students this year. Also, a big welcome goes out to the new Grade One student Ryanna Leslie. We’re glad to have you join our class.
After reading a story called, Sneaky Peeky Mystery, we baked some cupcakes. The cupcakes went missing while we were at the library. We went on a school wide treasure hunt with some magnifying glasses. Luckily, Mr. Vanthuyne had found our missing cupcakes and they were safe in his office.
The Kindergarten class will learn all about class rules, routines and exploring new surroundings. We will be practicing listening skills and learning to take turns and share. They will be learning to recognize the numbers to 5 and also to recognize the colors. They will have opportunities to work at Learning Centres and meet the animals in Alphabet Island.
In ELA the K/1 class is learning about “Precious Pets”. We will be reading interesting animal stories, learning new poetry about animals, and various activities related to this topic. We will hold a class pet show (not with live pets, though) on Wednesday, September 22. Just send a stuffed animal that day.
The Grade One class is learning new sight words, practicing how to print the lower case letters, and reviewing the sounds of the letters. They are working on numbers to 10 in Math and learning about Animals in Science. Mrs. Rogers is doing “Back to School Safety” in Health. Mrs. Rogers will be teaching Grade 1 Health this year. In Social Studies they will be working on module 1 of the Identity unit, “Me and my Family”. The K/1 class is practicing locomotion skills in Phys-ed.
The yellow HIGHLIGHTS order form requires a yes or no. Please sign and return this even if you do not want to subscribe as we are
entitled to free gifts from the company.
Parents are invited to attend Parent Night on Wednesday, September 15 at 7:00 pm. It will be held in the Grade K/1 classroom. It will be an “All You Need to Know about Grade K/1” session.
Our class is eager to master our ABC’s and 123’s!!! I look forward to working with the K/1 students and I am excited about the year of learning ahead!
Have a sensational September!

GRADE 2/3
Welcome back to a new school year! We had lots of excitement on August 30th as all of the students arrived with book bags brimming with supplies. We would like to welcome Selena Zbetnoff who has joined our classroom.
We were off to a flying start as we organized all of the supplies and got a start in each of the subject areas. Students were very excited to begin their new books. We are getting used to the new routines and expectations in each of the grade levels. On the first day we did a writing activity, where the Grade Three students wrote essays about their first day and the Grade Two students drew pictures and wrote a sentence about their first day. These are already on display in the hallway.
We have managed to do some baseline assessment in Reading, Writing, Spelling and Math. These results will be used to help track student progress this year.
In ELA we are doing an integrated theme about BUGS. We have completed a
patterned writing activity. We also went outside and caught bugs to study.
We looked at them through magnifying glasses and then drew what we saw. We
also wrote about our bugs. Of course the bugs were released at the end of
the day.
We have jumped right in to the first unit in Spelling. The dictations will take place on Fridays. In Phonics both grades are reviewing initial and final consonants. Our focus in Printing / Writing at this time is to reinforce proper pencil grip and correct letter formation.
In Math both grades will begin with the unit on patterning.
In Phys-ed. we are beginning with a games skill unit. Our first Science unit is learning about ANIMALS. In Social the Grade Three students will be exploring their identity.
We will be continuing the healthy morning snacks in our classroom. Students will be given about 5 minutes either just before or after recess to eat the snacks they bring from home.
Home Reading Record Books have been sent
home and I have requested some sets of little books, which will be sent home
once they arrive. Students are encouraged to read at home every day! It
does not matter what they read.
The single most important thing, which can help students to become better readers, is to have lots of practice reading. Reading to children is also beneficial.
I would like to thank everyone for completing and returning the many forms, which were sent home at the start of the year.
I am looking forward to a great year!
- Mrs. Marla Frison p
GRADE 4/5
Hello everyone and welcome back to a new school year. 16 students who have
“popped” into Mrs. King’s Grade 4/5 class this year: Amber Adams, Alyssa
Evans, Kierson Hennes, Jacob Knuttila, Cameron Stallmann, Danielle Townsend,
Colton Aldridge, Max Eckstein, Breanne Follensbee, Scott Hilts, Hellana
Oberle, Skye Radies, Kara Richardson, Nathan Ritchie, Brett Stimson
and Toni Theaker.
Students arrived at school on the first day, excited to see friends, select their desks and lockers, and put away their new supplies. We celebrated the start of a year of learning and being part of the Grade 4/5 classroom with a popcorn snack at the end of the day.
We are looking forward to the year and excited about learning new things in Grades 4 and 5. In ELA-Reading, we are laughing so hard our sides hurt as we begin our new unit on humour: “So Why Are You Laughing?”
The writing process and the 6 traits will be taught using a number of writing activities in ELA-Writing. We will also do spelling, journal writing, computers and focus some on handwriting. The Number Strand which focuses on place value is the first unit in Math for both grades. Our province of Saskatchewan will be the focus of our units in Social Studies. The first unit will center on Saskatchewan’s identity. We will learn lots about Force, Motion and Simple Machines in Science. In Health class we will be discussing Germs to begin with and then complete a unit on AIDS. The importance of active living, warm-ups and cool-downs, sportsmanship and skill development are the focus of Phys. Ed. In Arts Ed, we will complete some visual art activities and get started on a drama unit. We are very excited about the Band/Music program. The Grade 4s couldn’t wait for Ms. Luptak, our band director, to begin teaching them how to play recorders and the Grade 5s were very excited to choose their instruments.
Many students in our class have signed up for Cross-country running and the Midget Volleyball team. We are looking forward to cheering on our Spartan football and volleyball teams as their seasons kick-off. And, last but not least, we are looking forward to raising money in support of the 30th Anniversary Terry Fox Run this month.
It’s so nice to see the smiles on so many faces and feel the excitement of being back in school and hanging out with friends. It promises to be an excellent year in Grade 4/5.
- Mrs. Lisa King p
Midget Coed Volleyball
Grades 5 & 6

This year we plan to play games with Westberry, Elizabeth and Eston School. A schedule will be coming out shortly with dates and times. The practices will be held on Tuesdays and the time is 3:15 – 4:30 pm. We will start Tuesday, September 7. See you there. We look forward to some exciting times learning the basics of volleyball!!

Junior Boys’ Volleyball
This year is looking to be another exciting year of Junior Boys’ Volleyball at Eaton School. We have twelve players this year – Landon Schaeffer, Spencer Somerville, Seth Smith, Jonathan Guidinger, Wade Theaker, Brendan Ritchie, Riley Radies, Jack Miller, Garret King, Cole Huskins, Cody Huskins, Jesse Eisenkirch. Most of these boys played last year as well, so we should be a strong team this year.
Although it is early in the year, we have already begun practices. So far we have tournaments scheduled for Unity, Leader, Eston, and Outlook, and will likely have several more games still to be scheduled (including some home games where we hope you will come out and cheer us on). Good luck to this year’s Junior Boys’ Volleyball Team.
- Coach Michael Hoult p
Junior Girls’ Volleyball
Seventeen girls from grades 6 through 9 have already hit the court for the 2010 Jr. Girls’ Volleyball season. Our team is young, consisting mainly of grade 6 and 7 players, with only 5 senior players from grades 8 and 9. We welcome
Erika King Lara Schuh
Raylene Leslie Jenny Nunweiler
Dakota Price Regan Bailey
Jinnian Bews Raelle Follensbee
Brittany Marchand Cassidy Schuh
Kaylee Wickenheiser Ashley Adams
Kelsey Guidinger Loghan Hennes
Tessa King Chelsea Smith
Nikki Solvberg
The girls were full of enthusiasm at the first practice of the season and show great potential. The League schedule has not yet been set and we are in the process of booking into tournaments. By the time the October newsletter is published, we will be in full swing.

Football is back home in Eatonia and in
full swing right now as we prepared for our first game held Thursday
September 2nd in Eatonia. We have a large squad this year with 29
players in total, 19 from Eatonia and 10 from Marengo. Our team is showing
great potential for a strong season as we have many athletic individuals to
choose from. We have a fairly young team which may affect our consistency a
little. We have 3 Grade 12’s, 5 Grade 11’s, 12 Grade 10’s, and 9 Grade
9’s. Come on out and cheer loud!!

CAREER EDUCATION / CWEX
“It’s time to think.” The Career Education and Work Experience Programs offered at Eaton School
are just that. It is TIME provided for students to think about future plans (i.e. schooling,
occupations, travel, etc.) with a teacher to help them navigate that often daunting process. It is
TIME to review, acquire and apply skills necessary for each individual’s life plan, in an environment
where it safe to try new things. And for some, it may be a TIME to set that plan in place (i.e. applying
for post-secondary schooling, polishing resumés for employment, obtaining work visas for travel).
I am available in Eaton School to assist students in group and individual counseling situations on every
Day 3. Parents or students, you can reach me at the school on this day or at lisa.presler@sunwestsd.ca
and please check out the Sunwest School Division’s Careeer Development site at
http://cms.sunwestsd.ca/lewis/. If you are an employer and are considering taking in a Grade 10 work
Experience student, please contact me as well.
P.S. Reminder to the Grade 12 Students that it is first come, first serve for many post secondary
education institutions, so if you know where you are going, get those applications in! Also, please
check out www.scholarshipscanada.com and www.studentawards.com for scholarship information.

“A Single Dream. A World of Hope”
The Terry Fox National School Run Day
Thursday, September 30th, 2010
Eaton School is once again taking the Terry Fox Challenge. Past challenges include: A-Weigh We Go, The Amazing Coin Race, Stuck for a Buck, the Fear Factor Challenge, Deal or No Deal, Change for Change, Cancer “Can” be Beaten, and “Touchdowns for Terry”.
Since 2001, Eaton School has raised around $10,000!!! Our greatest totals raised have been in the last 3 or 4 years, with our smallest student population (approximately 125 students). What an accomplishment for a school our size. Way to go, Spartans!
This year, we encourage students and staff to bring their change donations to fill as many coffee cans as possible in hopes of beating our highest total ever of $1482. Students can bring their donations to their homeroom teachers from September 7th to 30th. Join us as we work together to “Pull for Terry” in the fight against cancer. Then, on Thursday, September 30th, Eaton School will participate in the National School Run as we walk around Eatonia.
