KINDERGARTEN/GRADE 1
My how time flies when you are busy and having fun.
February was full of many activities. The highlight for many was the 100th
day of school. It was action packed with the following… we read and/or
listened to 100 sight words, Grade One did 100 math facts, we all counted
100 items, read poems about 100, we did an assignment on 100. The best part
was in Phys-ed. when we performed 100 exercises.
The K/1 class had a Valentine’s Day party on February 14. Thanks so much to all the parents who sent healthy snacks for our party. It was a nice time for all.
The Willow Awards’ has been tallied in Eaton School. It’s called the Saskatchewan Young Readers’ Choice. We are waiting to hear which book won the most votes in Saskatchewan. Grade K/1 voted on The Delicious Bug.
The Kindergarten are now reviewing the letters of the alphabet and learning about the different sounds of the letters. They are presently on Ee with the alphabet puppets. We are reviewing telephone numbers and birth dates as well.
The Grade One class is becoming excellent spellers. They are doing a super job each week with spelling lists. They are learning about long vowels in Phonics. They have started printing sentences and practicing using finger spaces between words in their printing books. They are working on Level 9 in Sight Words.
In ELA we have finished up our winter unit. We will now be on the move working on a unit called Transportation.
Grade Ones are now learning about place value to 100 in Math. In Science they are learning about the Earth. In Social Studies they are learning about homes around the world.
The students have been practicing their choral speech for the Music Festival. Thanks to Mrs. Assmus for volunteering her time to give us a hand to prepare for Music Festival. K/1 will be performing on Tuesday, March 22 at the Eatonia United Church. Parents and friends are welcome to come and watch. Please notice that Kindergarten will come to school on Tuesday, March 22 and not on March 21 due to Music Festival. Keep in mind that the K/1 class plans to venture out on April 11 or 12 to the Leader Music Festival as well. (When I know the date I will let you know.)
The Grade One class is busy preparing for student/teacher interviews. Report cards will arrive home on March 18. We are looking forward to spring. Please send extra socks and pants for those wet and muddy days ahead of us. Stay green and Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Mrs. Shelley Follensbee p
February was a very busy month. We have been doing
assessments in all subject areas. We are updating out assessment
portfolios. Each student has completed a Diagnostic Reading Assessment as
well as an informal reading assessment. We are also completing our second
round of book talks. The students are doing a wonderful job and are sharing
some very interesting stories. Many students have been “caught reading” and
have been entered to win some of the reading prizes.
We have started our SPACE Theme in ELA. We wrote patterned stories called Solar System Sweethearts, and shared these stories with our class. We also wrote space adventure stories and we shared our final Friendship stories with the Kindergarten and Grade One class. Our class read all of the Willow books in February and we voted for our favorites. The class favorite by a landslide was “Farley Follows His Nose.” Each student wrote an essay explaining why they voted for the book they chose and these essays were shared with the class.
We have completed Unit 23 in Spelling and we will be doing a five unit review right after the break. In Writing the Grade Three students are practicing writing poems and the Grade Two students are just being introduced to cursive writing. Many students are continuing to struggle with proper pencil grip.
In Math both grades have
completed their units on addition and subtraction. We did some timed math
facts for adding and subtracting. We are currently working on measurement.
The Grade Two students are working with non standard units while the Grade
Three students are using standard units.
In Arts-ed. we have been learning about drawing faces. In Phys-ed. we are working on gymnastics skills. Our first emphasis is on safe landings. Students will be learning about supports, balances, rotations, and hangs.
In Science we have completed our unit on the Earth and we will next be learning about the Earth’s resources. In Social Studies the Grade Three students are learning about the provinces, territories and their capitals. We also took part in the Great Canadian Mail Race and letters have started arriving back from all across Canada. This is a great opportunity to learn about communities in other parts of Canada.
We also had a chance to learn a song about Groundhog Day and we did some center activities. We also worked on some Valentine center activities. I would like to thank everyone for helping us with the valentine party by sending drinks, snacks and board games.
Music Festival will be taking place in Eatonia on March 22. Our class will be performing two poems, and we have started working on them. Several students are also doing individual poems. We hope that many people will be able to come and be part of our audience.

GRADE 4/5
Spring is in the air. Our class came back from the February break rested and ready to roll. Good thing because lots will be happening in our room this month. In ELA we are reading and completing a study of the novel, “Owls in the Family”. We have been working hard in both Spelling and Phonics. So far we have completed 18 units in Spelling and 60 pages in Phonics. Grade Fours finished a unit on Patterns and Equations last month and are going to be learning about Multiplication and Division. Grade Fives are moving on from Multiplication and Division to Patterns and Equations. Our class will be participating in World Math Day on March 1st. We are learning about Saskatchewan’s Past and our Heritage in Social Studies. The students had lots of fun creating booklets to show everything we learned in Science about Simple Machines. We can’t wait to get started on our next Science unit – The Human Body. Our Health classes have been spent identifying healthy foods and in Phys- Ed., we will begin playing Badminton. Band and Music classes with Miss Luptak are lots of fun.
Valentine’s Day was fun and tasty. We exchanged valentines with our friends and we got to taste lots of chocolates, cookies and suckers. It was sweet!
Outside the classroom, many of our
classmates have been participating in Power Hour with Mrs. Follensbee and
Mrs. Nunweiler. We have enjoyed playing in all the snow, but sure do prefer
those warm days. A highlight for February was our school ski trip to Table
Mountain. It was great!!
We are looking forward to St. Patrick’s Day, report cards and parent-teacher interviews, and spring in March.

SRC REPORT
Finals are over and a new semester is well under way.
The Junior Girls’ Basketball Team had a busy start to February with league play and lots of practice! They had their playoffs on the 15th, and played fantastic, only losing their chance to move on to Districts by one basket! The girls should be proud of themselves for having such a strong finish to their season. The Senior Girls’ Basketball Team has also been busy with league games and tournaments. They look forward to much more court time in March!
The Drama Club has been busy rehearsing for their play, which they will be performing for the school shortly, so watch for the date! Many band students have also been busy preparing their music pieces for the Music Festival in March and April.
The SRC has been selling Telemiracle ‘Hands’ for $1.00 and also had a bake sale on the 16th with proceeds going to Telemiracle.
The staff and students had a very busy month, and very much enjoyed the February break. March will bring badminton, exams to study for, and hopefully warmer weather! Hope everyone gets a chance to get outside and enjoy it!

EATON SCHOOL SKI TRIP
The annual Eaton School Ski Trip to Table Mountain Ski Resort for
students in Grades 4-12 took place on Thursday, February 10, 2011. We
were joined by 17 parent chaperones and would like to thank them. We
loaded up the buses and were on our way by 6:30 that morning, arriving
for the orientation session and to get our rentals and lessons. We hit
the slopes for a great day. The weather was incredible! The
temperature that day was a high of 0°. The students made many runs and
everyone was very happy, but tired on the bus ride home.
A HUGE SPARTAN THANK YOU to Mr. Chris Theaker
who volunteered to drive one of the buses when the original driver was unable to
do so. Eaton School students and staff greatly appreciate your donation of time
and that you helped make our day of skiing possible. THANK YOU!
JUNIOR GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
The Junior Girls’ Basketball Team had a fantastic season this year. Although we only had 8 players, the girls worked very hard and progressed a lot. On the team this year was Erika “the Killer” King in Grade 9; Jenny “the Ninja” Nunweiler and Dakota “the Destroyer” Price in Grade 8; Cassidy “the Smasher” Schuh, Raelle “the Flamethrower” Follensbee, and Regan “the Basher” Bailey in Grade 7; and Chelsea “the Crusher” Smith and Ashley “the Annihilator” Adams in Grade 6.
We had an exciting season, playing games in Eatonia, Outlook, Eston, and Kindersley. While the weather played havoc with the schedule now and then, there was a lot of awesome basketball when it co-operated. During our tournament in Kindersley the girls showed a lot of heart, desire, and developing talent as we played against teams of all Grade Nines.
Our section playoffs were on February 15th in Kindersley. We played two games back to back (which is tough when you have such a small team, but our girls were up to the challenge) against Kindersley and Eston. In the first game against Kindersley, the girls showed how much skill they have developed this year, playing very well. It was a nail-biting game to the final seconds, which unfortunately we lost 35-33. Nevertheless, the girls should be more than proud with how well they played. Despite being exhausted for our second game against Eston, the girls found reserves of strength and played a fantastic game, winning 43-38.
All in all it was a great season of Junior Girls’ Gasketball!
Mr. Michael Hoult, Coach p

SENIOR GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
First of all, a big thank-you to all of the student and parent volunteers who helped make our home tournament a big success, and to all of the fans that came out to cheer on the Spartans! Special thanks goes out to Megan Hayes, who worked tirelessly finding refs for our home tournament, and continues to organize our game schedule and refs. We ended up finishing with a record of 2 wins and 2 losses at our tournament, beating Unity and Kindersley, and losing to Biggar and Shaunavon. We really enjoyed finally having the opportunity to play in front of a home town crowd!!
In February we travelled to Biggar, where we lost in a close game, and hosted and beat Elrose, in exhibition games. We travelled to Kenaston for a mini-tournament against Outlook/Kenaston and Rosthern Junior College. We weren’t able to beat these teams, but we played well and learned alot!!
Some highlights of the past month included being ranked in the top 10 in the province in our 1A category and having a close match against Kenaston/Outlook, who have been ranked 3rd in the province in the 3A classification!!
Upcoming games for March include Tuesday, March 2 in
Elrose and a tournament in Shaunavon March 4 - 5. We invite everyone to
come out and cheer us on in Elrose March 11-12, for conference play-offs.
We will be competing against Elrose, Hepburn, and Loreburn for a chance to
advance to Regionals March 18-19.
Last but not least, GO SPARTANS!!
Ms. Kim Soverville, Coach p

I would like to send out a huge thank you to Eaton School's staff, students, and parents for your
awesome support while I filled in as the Career Ed/CWEX teacher from September to December!
Also, thanks to various local businesses who were so willing to allow me to place Grade 10 students with
them to gain valuable work experience. I hope to see these students as I'm out and about in the next
couple months and I look forward to continue as a substitute teacher at Eaton School. Please show
your continued support as Mr. Jesse Desjarlais takes over the reigns! Thanks a bunch!
