During the month of December the K/1 class enjoyed the Christmas theme in ELA. Some of the skills included making connections, retelling the story, and elements of a story. The students were very crafty in December as they made winter scene paintings, ornaments and window art.
The Kindergarten students worked on recognizing numbers to 15 and Letters to Vv during December. They also worked on color recognition. They will be continuing to learn the letters of the alphabet and counting to 100. We are working on these skills at school presently. Please review these at home as well.
The Grade One class has learned to form upper and lower case letters using lines. They are starting to use formal printing books using lines. The students are reviewing upper and lower case letters and learning to print names and words. In Phonics they are learning about short vowel Ee. They are completing Lesson 6 in Sight Words. They are working on subtraction to 10 in Math. The Grade One class started a formal Spelling program this month. Each Monday the students will get a list of words to practice the words at home. We will have the test on Fridays for Spelling. In Science the unit of study will continue to be the senses.
We are working on the study of mapping in Grade One/Two Social Studies. This month we are working on an ELA unit about Winter Fun. We will be reading many different stories and poems. If you have any books or items that are related to our classroom theme of ‘winter’, please send it to school, with your name on it.
Please take notice that Show and Tell will be held on Day 5 now, as we will focus on some other forms of oral presentations. Thanks goes out to the parents who provided Christmas party snacks and birthday cupcakes.
We are all looking forward to all the excitement and fun that the year 2011 will bring! All the best in the New Year!

Happy New Year!
This school year is certainly flying by. December was lots of fun as we prepared our songs and dances for the Christmas Concert. We did several Christmas crafts as well. We had a Christmas center set up for students to select activities for their free time. Students enjoyed their visit to Santa’s Hut.
We continued our FRIENDS Theme in ELA and read the story Frog and Toad are Friends. We wrote friendly letters. We read the story My Friend Jacob and learned about character sketches. We did a novel study of the book Horrible Harry in Room 2B. We completed a response booklet that had questions after each chapter. Throughout this novel we focused on the characters in the story, and the choices they made in their interactions with others.
In Spelling we completed Unit 16. We started Unit 17 but the dictation will be on January 7th, the Friday after the school break as we have two very short weeks.
In Phonics the Grade Two students are learning about compound words, while the Grade Three students have been learning about consonant digraphs and contractions.
In Printing the Grade Two students are continuing the review of proper letter formation. The Grade Three students are now practicing to write in sentences. We are also working to correct some bad habits with pencil grips so that their fingers are working together.
In Math both grades are working on Unit Three which involves addition and subtraction. The Grade Two students are working on the math facts to 20. The Grade Three students are learning about estimating, mental math, and have learned several strategies for doing addition with regrouping. It is important for students to be confident of their addition and subtraction math facts to 18, so please continue working on this skill.
In Phys-Ed. we have spent some time on sending and receiving skills for volleyball, and we are now working on basketball skills.
In Science we are learning about the EARTH. Students are able to label the different layers, and tell something about each layer. We are also learning about the different kinds of soil and the ways the earth’s crust changes.
In Social the Grade
Three
students have learned how to use GOOGLE EARTH to view different places. We
are comparing Eatonia to different places.
We have completed our Power-point slideshows. Students have added pictures as well as custom animation to have different elements appear in different ways. We also visited several interactive Christmas sites on the computer. Our favorite was one that enabled students to play songs using reindeer noses for the keys!
Students took part in a classroom gift exchange on the last day of classes.
Thanks for all the gifts and treats for Christmas!
- Mrs. Marla Frison p
GRADE 4/5

We had a very busy December in the classroom. We have been reading and responding to different stories and poems about relationships in our new ELA unit “Within My Circle – Times to Share”. We wrote stories about Christmas and we did a number of fun Christmas activities. We have completed the first twelve units in Spelling and we are on page 40 in Phonics. The Grade Fours completed the subtraction unit of the number strand and spent the last few days before Christmas learning about the calendar and time. We will wrap that unit up now that we are back in the New Year. The Grade Fives continue to learn about multiplication and division. We will finish our study of Saskatchewan Location this month and then move on to a study of Saskatchewan Heritage. In Science, we continued to learn more about Force and Motion but we will also complete this unit shortly so we can begin learning about simple machines. Mrs. Rogers is helping us learn more about nutrition in Health. We are going to have to get back into our routines and focus on healthy living in Phys-ed. after the Christmas break. We will also be honing our basketball skills. Our time in Arts-ed. throughout December was spent preparing for our performance of “It’s a Magical Time of the Year” at the community Old Fashioned Christmas celebration. Our class had lots of fun acting in the play and everyone did a fantastic job singing and dancing too. Thanks to all of the parents and community members for their words of encouragement and congratulations. The students in Grades Four and Five also participated in the Eaton School Band Winter Concert on December 16th. High fives go to them for their outstanding performance.
Now that we are back in school, January promises to be very busy. All the best for 2011 from our class to you.
- Mrs. Lisa King p

Due to storage restrictions, we request that students only bring plastic crazy carpets to school for sledding. Other sliders or toboggans are not permitted. Thank you.

JUNIOR GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
The Junior Girls’ Basketball Team is having a great season so far. Although we have a small team this year, the girls have been working hard at practices to improve their skills and learn how to play basketball well. This year on the team we have: Erika King, Jenny Nunweiler, Dakota Price, Raelle Follensbee, Cassidy Schuh, Regan Bailey, Chelsea Francis, Ashley Adams, and Nikki Solvberg.
Although we have only had one game so far this season, the girls played very well. In January and February we will have many more games, including several in Eatonia! Now that the Christmas break is over, the girls will have to get back in shape and ready to face their next opponents. With some hard work, however, they should be ready for them. Here’s looking forward to the rest of a great season.

Grade 8/9 – We have been simulating a “real life” work situation through www.realgameonline.ca. This past month, the students are dealing with job loss and understanding what their options are in the event that this real life situation presents itself.
Grade 10 Career and Work Experience – Watch out for the grade 10 students at various job sites in the community in the New Year. They will be gaining valuable experience in their fields of interest to both get a taste for that career option and to learn many hands-on and transferable skills. *Students – remember to add to your portfolios as experiences arise.
Grade 11 – We have been assessing skills, interests and abilities with the Caps/Cops/Copes tests. These tests will serve as a useful tool to aid the grade 11’s in thinking about potential future plans.
Grade 12 - Students have been busy applying to schools and for scholarships. They may want to start thinking about funding for post-secondary training at this time. Information on government assisted student loans can be found at: http://www.aeei.gov.sk.ca/student-loans/

SWAT NEEDS YOUR HELP!
In order to raise the remaining funds needed to purchase canoes, paddles and some additional camping equipment, SWAT has applied for a PEPSI REFRESH EVERYTHING grant. This grant is a unique opportunity to acquire corporate funds from an outside source and thus reduce the fundraising burden on our community.
In December, PEPSI accepted grant applications from all across Canada and SWAT was selected as one of the top 300. The most interesting characteristics of this grant is that it is awarded based on a democratic vote. The Canadian public votes, via the internet, on which applications they feel are worthy of receiving the grant. SWAT NEEDS YOUR HELP! The more people that vote, the better our chances of receiving a grant.
Voting opened on January 4, 2011 and will close at the end of February. A person can vote every day while voting is open. The top three projects will each receive a grant. This grant would ensure that SWAT could run independently and would be accessible to students at Eaton School for years to come.
What we are asking you to do…
If you have any questions about SWAT, please feel free to contact me at the school.
Thanking you in advance,
Craig Vanthuyne, Principal
