ATTENDANCE / LATE POLICY
Regular and punctual attendance is essential for academic success. Although some school activities can be completed by the student at a later date, many others require group participation and must be done during regular class time. Davidson School believes that students have an obligation to their peers to be present for classroom activities.
Policy
Davidson School students are expected to attend and be on time for all classes and curricular activities during regular school hours.
Students shall be granted an excused absence if one or more of the following apply:
- student is ill or at a medical appointment
- student is doing pressing seasonal work
- student is on an extended vacation outside of the school division
- student is attending an approved school activity
- student is unable to attend because of adverse weather or road conditions
- student is participating in a Provincial competition
- student is called away as a result of death of a loved one or other family emergency
Procedures
- Daily student attendance shall be the responsibility of the classroom teacher. Daily attendance shall be reported to the office at 3:00 p.m.
- If a student is to be absent from school or a class, their parent(s) should contact the school in advance. In the event that a parent does not give advance notice of student absence, the school will phone home to make contact and student shall go to the office when they return to school, where a staff member will contact the parent(s) to confirm the reason for the absence.
- In the event that a student is absent for a scheduled exam or classroom activity and no contact is made in advance, the student may be assigned a mark of 0% for that exam or activity.
- When a student misses a class for any reason, it is the responsibility of the student to arrange to meet with the teacher(s) involved at a mutually convenient time to catch up on missed work.
- If any student has 5 unexcused absences in a 10/20/30 level course, the school shall notify the parents and student in writing. Five additional unexcused absences shall result in written notification to parents and student, and a meeting to plan for improved attendance. Five additional unexcused absences shall result in loss of credit.
- In the event that any student is notified that credit has been lost as a result of unexcused absences, that student or their parent(s) shall have ten school days to appeal the decision.
- If at any time a student is excluded from a class by a teacher as a result of inappropriate behaviour, that class shall be counted as an unexcused absence.
- Student tardiness shall be managed on a case-by-case basis by the teacher involved. Tardiness may result in loss of classroom privileges. Continued tardiness will result in a CASE meeting with parents and teachers, and the possibility of disciplinary action.
SPARE POLICY
Davidson School believes that all students should complete as many classes as possible during grades 10-12. Some students in grades 11 and 12 may choose to have spare periods in their timetables. Davidson School believes that student activity during these periods is the shared responsibility of the student, their parent(s), and the school itself. Davidson School sees spare periods as an opportunity to catch up or polish school work or access individual assistance from a teacher or teachers.
Policy
Student activity during spare periods shall be determined by consensus between the student involved, their parent(s), and the school principal or designate.
Procedure
- Spare periods for students entering grades 11 or 12 shall be determined by consensus during the class registration meeting for that student held in June of that year.
- By consensus, the student, their parent(s), and the principal or their designate, shall determine whether the student will have the privilege of leaving the school during spare periods. If the parties involved agree that this privilege is to be accorded, the student’s parent(s) will sign a release which indemnifies the school from responsibility for the student’s actions and well-being during the time that the student is away from the school.
2.1 If a student remains in the school during a spare period, they may work quietly in the student lounge, the library, a classroom, or the computer lab, provided a supervisor is available. Students may not be in the hallways during spare periods.
2.2 If a student leaves the school during a spare period, they shall leave the school as soon as possible after the end of the previous period, and return in time for the beginning of the next period. Students leaving the school shall sign out at the office prior to leaving and sign in at the office when they return.
- On an individual basis, the student, their parent(s), and the principal or designate may agree to have the student attend a regularly scheduled class during spare periods. In this event, the classroom teacher shall be responsible for monitoring student attendance and behaviour during these periods.
DISCIPLINE PLAN
The basic goal of discipline in schools is to develop and promote growth of student self-discipline, and to encourage and reinforce responsible behavior. In order for DS to achieve our vision of a caring, supportive environment, well defined expectations of behaviour are important. Davidson School believes that teachers and parents share the responsibility for supporting responsible decisions on the part of students.
