| The Distance Learning Centre (DLC)
is offering 22 on-line courses during the 2009-2010 school year. A total
of 36 courseswill be offered during the 2010-2011 year.
The majority of courses offered are synchronous (live) broadcasts
using Bridgit conferencing software. SMART interactive white tboards
are utilized for displaying instructional materials and also allow
communication
between
the host
site and receiving schools. The DLC teacher is also connected to the
students through audio channels, which allow students to ask questions
at any time. Web cams can also be used, as well as document cameras
for the display of student work, lab activities and other related activities.
Moodle software is also relied upon to host much of the course content
and assignments. Moodle is an open source course management system
that
students can access at anytime from any Internet location. Students
can use Moodle to view notes, assignments, grades and other
instructional materials.
The students are assigned individual accounts and parents can also
access the grades for their son or daughter.
Students can use Moodle to complete and submit their assignments
to their instructor and communicate with the teacher via email, chat,
forums
or group discussions.
As course development continues, the DLC will be recording class lessons
and making them available to students within their courses for use
in review or for days in which they are absent. The recorded lessons
are stored through Silverlight, a on-line video and audio storage site
and links are available within Moodle course sites.
