Summary of School Viability Review Process
In accordance with the provisions of The Education Act, 1995,
every fall, the Director of Education provides the Board of Education
with the names of any Sun West schools that meet the criteria outlined
in the Board of Education's School Review Viability Policy. The Board
will then decide if this school or schools should be reviewed, which
then follows the procedures outlined in relevant provincial legislation.
This process involves the formation of a Local Review Committee, which
makes recommendations to the Board. Following the review the Board
of Education decides whether or not it would be
appropriate to make
a motion of consideration for grade discontinuance or closure. If a
motion
of consideration is made then a public meeting is held in that
school's community to inform the community about the procedures related
to the
motion and to invite public input and submissions to the Board concerning
the operation of the school.

of grade discontinuance or closure for Harris-Tessier Central School,

School. Mlden Central School was closed on August 6, 2008.

of Landis School. As required by The Education Act, 1995, a School
Review Committee was established composed of representatives of the
Landis School Community Council and the Municipalities where students
attending Landis School reside. The Committee compiled reports to the
Board of Education, which they provided to the Board at meetings in
late 2008 and early 2009. At its January 20, 2009, meeting the Board
of Education indicated that it felt that the operations of Landis School
did not indicate a motion of consideration for grade discontinuance
or closure was warranted at this time and voted to end the review process.
According to current Board policy, Landis will not be reviewed again
until at least the fall of 2011.
